A child’s first dental visit can either be an exciting or scary time for children. As dentists, we do our best to promote a fun and exciting environment so that little ones feel safe, secure, and comfortable while in the chair. We know it can cause some uncertainty because of the unfamiliarity of the dentist’s office, but as professionals, we can create a positive experience that gets children excited about oral health and hygiene. As you prepare to bring your little one in for their first appointment, hear from a dentist who shares what you can expect.
When Should My Child First See the Dentist?
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that parents bring their child in for their first dental appointment as soon as their first tooth erupts. While this timeframe is different for each patient, parents should also consider scheduling an appointment before their child reaches the age of one. Whichever comes first will be fine.
Although the initial visit will be more about education and getting to know staff and surroundings, your child can become more familiar with the process even at an early age.
What Will the Appointment Be Like?
When bringing your child in for their first appointment, you’ll likely keep them in your lap. You may also choose to hold them in your lap while seated in the dentist’s chair. After the dentist takes a quick look at the mouth, examining the teeth, gums, and oral and facial development, they will clean any existing teeth gently before discussing helpful tips you can use at home as well as answering your questions.
Although it might seem as if proper brushing technique for one or two teeth might be all you discuss, your dental team will also go over proper nutrition and breaking bad habits (i.e., thumb-sucking, pacifier use).
By adopting good oral hygiene habits at an early age as well as setting your child up with a trusted professional who can monitor their growth and development as they age, you can feel good knowing your child’s smile is on the right path.
How Should I Prepare My Child for Their First Visit?
If your child is a bit older before they have their first visit, you’ll want to make sure that you always talk positively about the dentist’s office. Children can easily pick up on fear and uncertainty, so if you appear nervous, they will as well.
There are countless books, videos, and kid-friendly resources available to help little ones prepare for a dental visit. You can choose which ones your child will resonate with best and work to help them get excited about taking proper care of their smile.
