Below, you can find out some insurance basics to help you better understand how your plan works.

Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

To understand your dental insurance plan, you’ll need to commit a few terms to memory:

  • The deductible is a set amount that your insurance company will require you to pay out of pocket before they begin covering treatments.
  • The maximum is a capped-off amount of money that that your insurance will pay out for treatments over the course of a calendar year.
  • The premium is the monthly or annual amount that you pay for coverage.

In addition to these terms, keep in mind that many dental insurance plans restart on January 1st of each year, which means the maximum and deductible reset. So, to get the most out of your benefits, you’ll need to utilize them over the course of the calendar year.

What Does Your Dental Insurance Plan Cover?

As mentioned above, it’s important to keep in mind that every plan can differ. So, in order to determine whether yours will cover a certain treatment, it’s best to call them directly. That being said, many companies utilize a 100-80-50 structure, which means that they cover 100 percent of preventive visits, 80 percent of basic dental treatments, and 50 percent of more invasive procedures.
